Oceanside

  1. The Oceanside Pier

The Oceanside pier is a tough one to shoot. It's very, very crowded. Probably more crowded than the Santa Monica Pier. This photo is taken later in the night, after most of the people who were lingering from the sunset left. The mist from the ocean created an interesting effect on my lens. It turned my UV filter into a soft glow filter. So I took advantage of it on a few shots before cleaning it off.

  2. Purple Sunset at the Oceanside Pier

This is an HDR photo of the sun just about to set at the oceanside pier. I love how colorful everything gets during the sunsets at the beach. It's one of the main reasons why I love to focus on beach photography so much more than anywhere else. Everything just lights up and the water reflects all the saturation. Sunsets or sunrises always make for the best ocean pictures. Although I think I like sunsets a little more since everything is a bit more chaotic. Sunrises are usually a lot more calm. Purple Sunset, Oceanside Pier, Beach Photo

  3. In the Surf at the Oceanside Pier

In this picture of the ocean I was knee high in the water as it was racing by about two inches below my camera. I was doing some long exposure HDR beach photography and was on my last shot of the three shot sequence when a wave came in. Instead of picking up my tripod and running away I just braced for impact. It was a bit sketchy but I'm glad I did it. The other photographers there probably thought I was insane.

It's actually crazy when walking in knee to even ankle high water the sea life that swims up with the waves. I stepped on something that squirmed when walking back from this shot. Glad I did not get stung by a sting ray.

  4. Low Tide at the Oceanside Pier

The lights of the Oceanside Pier are probably the brightest out of any of the piers. I've actually surf here a few times at night under the pier lights. It's a little scary and I remember stepping on fish or something and freaking out. Actually when I was doing photos here this night I was in knee high water and while walking back into shore I kicked a sting ray or sand shark or something. Glad I didn't get stung or my next week would have been ruined.

As the water pulls back the wet sand almost ats as a mirror. You can see the reflection of the pier and the lights almost perfectly. It's a pretty cool place to do some HDR night photography.

  5. Watching the sunset at the Oceanside Pier

Was in San Diego this weekend and while driving back north the clouds where doing something interesting. I had just enough time to swing by the Oceanside Pier. I was worried because down in Del Mar the marine layer was moving in on the coast. As I got off on Mission and was driving towards the beach I noticed the sky was pretty clear, just a little haze and the sun was huge. I got just enough time to get down to the beach and shoot this shot of a few kids watching the sunset. This was probably my third setup.

They say right as the sun is about to go over the horizon the last very tip will turn green. It didn't do it this night and I've never seen it in all the hundreds of nights I've been out surfing during the sunset. But, the other night when I was shooting in Hermosa I saw it. I think the sky needs to be very clear for it to happen but when it does it's cool. Next time you see a sunset see if pops green right before it goes down.
