This is my review and experiences using the original Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L series lens. It has been my favorite lens for a long time and is definitely the most versatile.
Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM Review
The Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L is my main workhorse lens. Most of my best prints have come from this photo. It’s not the sharpest lens in my kit, but it still has excellent clarity and contrast.
Its very useful and versatile range from 24 to 70 makes it Canon’s most popular professional zoom lens. With a full-frame camera sensor, it offers excellent landscape capabilities at the 24mm end and wonderful portraits at the long 70mm end.
Speed & Bokeh
It’s pretty fast at f2.8, and the bokeh looks very good and clean. I was very impressed with how good the bokeh looked when I first purchased my copy.
Durability
My lens was very sharp when I first bought it three years ago, but it now needs tuning. This could be because I take it everywhere and have dropped it several times. This brings me to the next point. The lens is very durable, but it is slightly on the heavy side. The weight can make it slightly more difficult to hold still, so I’ve found I need to shoot at a slightly faster shutter than with my lightweight primes.
Discontinued
Canon has discontinued this lens to replace it with something they promise to be sharper and lighter. They’ve also worked a few other minor things out of it. The new lens will have an 82mm thread vs the current 77mm threads.
Because it’s been discontinued, the price has gone up a bit. You can check current prices for new and used lenses at Amazon.
