Canon RF mirrorless cameras came onto the scene in 2018. Still, technically, Canon was doing mirrorless long before that with the M system back in 2012 with the Canon EOS M, a line of cameras now discontinued. Canon is now moving all future APS-C cameras to the RF mount.
My Top Picks for 2026
Best Overall: Canon R5 Mark II โ 45MP stacked sensor, 30fps bursts, solid 8K video, and genuinely good autofocus. The default answer for most shooters who want one camera that does everything well.
Best for Video: Canon R6 V โ Canon stripped the EVF and leaned fully into video with this one. If you’re primarily a filmmaker and don’t miss the viewfinder, it’s a capable cinema-adjacent body at a realistic price.
Best Speed/Action: Canon R1 โ dual CFexpress Type-B slots, the fastest AF Canon has ever shipped, and built like a tank. The answer when missing the shot isn’t an option.
Best APS-C: Canon R7 โ dual card slots, 32MP, serious burst speeds. Canon’s APS-C line got a lot more interesting when they moved it to RF mount, and the R7 is the one to get if you don’t need full frame.
Best Value: Canon R8 โ entry-level full frame that inherits the R6’s sensor and AF engine. If you’re coming from a DSLR and want RF without the R6 price tag, this is the move.

This list includes Canon RF Full Frame cameras, Canon APS-C cameras, some Canon M cameras, and a few older Canon DSLR cameras I’ve tested. The chart also shows the type of camera, whether APS-C or Full-frame and I’m including some DSLR cameras. I’ve also included each camera’s type of memory card configuration and links to memory card guides.

Canon cameras have supported various cards, from CF, CFast 2.0, and lately, UHS-I, UHS-II, and CFExpress.
Today, most RF Canon cameras support UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards or CFexpress Type-B memory cards; however, older Canon cameras use CF or CFast memory cards.
Understanding the Canon RF Naming System
Canon’s numbering runs backwards from what you’d expect โ lower number means more camera:
- R1: Flagship. Professionals, sports, photojournalism.
- R3: Speed-focused. Global shutter architecture, serious burst.
- R5: High-resolution hybrid. The workhorse for studio and landscape work.
- R6: Well-rounded mid-range. The most popular camera in the lineup for a reason.
- R7/R8: Step down. R7 is APS-C enthusiast, R8 is entry full-frame.
- R10/R50/R100: Entry APS-C. Good starting points, limited ceiling.
- C-series (C70, C80, C400): Cinema line. Log profiles, cooling, XLR audio โ built for video production, not stills.
Mark numbers (Mark II, Mark III) just indicate generation within a line โ more is newer.
