Must-Have Accessories | Canon G7X Mark III

  • January 17, 2020
  • AGriffin

A list of all the best and most essential camera accessories and vlogging accessories for the mighty Canon G7x Mark III.

Note: It’s important you update the firmware right when you get this camera. Firmware v1.0 had that focusing issue where the camera was optimized for sort of video focusing where it tries to keep things smooth and slow. There is a new focus mode in the new firmware that allows the camera to perform more like the mark II which is better for photography. So be sure to upgrade and then you can ignore all those negative reviews on BHphoto and Amazon.

The firmware you want is v1.10 or with more improvements grab v1.20 for 24p. It’s still not quite to the G7X II level but it’s a lot better.

Best Accessories Canon G7X III | Essentials

Best Screen Protectors Canon G7X III

There are several options out there now for screen protectors for the G7X style cameras. Some are very affordable and they’ll even give you a three-pack which is great. However, my go-to brand has been Expert Shield because I usually don’t need a three-pack, I’d rather not have more junk laying around my office hoarded in a door and never thrown away because of this idea that one day I might need. Instead, I use the one-pack by Expert Shield with the lifetime warranty.

Expert Shield Screen Protectors

Available At: Amazon

Expert Shield has a few nice options you can choose from. Crystal Clear is the standard screen protector you probably have on your phone. It’s thin and protects your camera from light scratches or dings. Glass is a thicker material that will add more protection and it isn’t as likely to peel away if you put the camera in your pocket. Anti-Glare is the same style as the crystal-clear but it is an anti-glare material that dramatically cuts reflections. The anti-glare will reduce the display quality but sometimes this is ok. I like the Anti-Glares and I’ve tested a few brands and had to come back to Expert Shield because the other brands reduced the image quality too much.

Best Batteries Canon G7x III

Official Canon Batteries NB-13L

Available At: Amazon

You will likely need more than one battery for the G7X, and this is the official battery by Canon. Official batteries are always more expensive but they are always hassle-free and just work the best.

Some people like going all official, but if you just want some backup batteries, the third-party brands are totally fine for this camera.

Best Third-Party Batteries By Wasabi With Charger

Available At: Amazon

Wasabi is my favorite third-party battery brand. They are very reliable and their performance is always consistent.

This two-pack comes with a wall charger and a car adapter.

Wasabi is a California company that gets its lithium cells from Japan.

Best Memory Cards Canon G7X III

I’ve tested all the most popular UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards in the Canon G7x 3. You really only need a good UHS-I card, so don’t waste your money on UHS-II cards.

I have a few nice recommendations you can look at in my guide here.

UV Filters & Lens Caps

There are a few great options now for adding your own UV filters or lens caps.

Lensmate G7X Mark II Quick Change Filter Adapter Kit

Available At: Amazon

Lensmate makes a really cool quick-change filter adapter kit for the G7X series cameras. They make some of the best camera accessories and I’ve been a huge fan of their gear for years. I highly recommend their products even though you sometimes pay a premium price.

Here are a few options for UV filters. I even included a polarizer.

Tiffen 52mm UV Filter: Amazon

B+W 52MM UV Filter: Amazon

G7X Mark III UV Filter Mods

Available At: Amazon

If you want to attach a UV filter to the G7X III then JJC has a nice option here. The UV filter has a 99.5% transmittance value which is really good.

G7X Lens Cap UV Filter Adapter

Available At: Amazon

If you a lens cap with a UV filter threads so you can apply your own UV filter with a 49mm thread, then here is a nice option by JJC.

Camera Cases / Body Protection

YUYUNG Silicon Camera Case

Available At: Amazon

Basically a condom for your camera. These are kind of cool for when you need your camera to be a bit more rugged. It is made of Silicon so expect it to wear out over time or stretch. Often times with cases like this need to replaced after a while. The good news is they are cheap enough so it’s not a huge deal.

G7X III Vlogging Accessories

If you plan on using the G7X III as a vlogging machine, you may need a little cage to mount mics, monitors ore lights too. Here are a few great options.

SmallRig Vlogging Cage

Available At: Amazon

If you want to turn this little G7X Mark III into a vlogging monster, check out this cool cage by SmallRig. It allows you to mount a mic or light off to the side so that your LCD screen isn’t blocked.

SmallRig Cold Shoe Plate

Available At: SmallRig

If you don’t want the full cage, this rig is your best option for attaching a mic or wireless mic because it still gives you plenty of room to access the mic port. I can’t find it anywhere except on the Smallrig website.

Cleaning Accessories

Micro-Fiber Cleaning Cloths 6-Pack

6-pack micro fiber cleaning clothAvailable At: Amazon

While a T-shirt is fine for cleaning off your lens or rear LCD screen out on the go, it’s really nice to have some micro-fiber cleaning cloths to give your gear a thorough cleaning before or after shooting. These won’t leave dust and lint on your lenses like clothing will and this is really the only way to perfectly clean a UV filter before installing it on your lens.

Best Accessories G7X Mark III Conclusions

It’s a simple little camera but there are surprisingly a lot of accessories for it. Because of the amazing versatility, the G7X III is great for vlogging, pocket video and of course the photos blow the smartphones out of the water.

If you find any more accessories that you think are must-have, let me know. Now that the firmware has mostly fixed the focus issues, hopefully, sales pick back up and more accessories come available from third-party brands. I’ll post them here when they do!
