Must Have Accessories Canon M50 / Kiss M

  • August 6, 2019
  • AGriffin

A guide for all the essential accessories for the Canon M50, also known as the Kiss M.

For years I’ve been testing different batteries, memory cards, screen protectors on various cameras to find which products and brands are the best and which should be considered. These are the products I use when I’m shooting and they work great for the Canon M50.

Best Accessories Canon M50 | The Basics

Best Screen Protectors For Canon M50

I keep trying other brands of screen protectors and always end up circling back around to Expert Shield.

If you’re just looking for a crystal clear style protectors, many brands are great, but Expert Shield has the best Anti-Glare screen protector I’ve been able to find, and also a really nice glass screen protector. They offer a lifetime warranty and honor it.

There are three options, Anti-Glare, Crystal Clear and Glass. I’m using Anti Glare since I use this camera a lot for street photography.

Best Batteries Canon M50 / Kiss M

The official Canon LP-E12 are the best batteries for the M50 or Kiss M, but there are a few really nice third party brands that I trust.

I always go to Wasabi, BM, and RavPower. RavPower still hasn’t made an LP-E12 battery so Wasabi and BM are the best options.

Third-party batteries almost never perform as well as the official Canon batteries but they are a fraction of the price. Be sure to cycle them a few times to get the maximum capacity.

Official Canon LP-E12 Battery

The Official Canon LP-E12 battery is the best, safest option. They run the longest and rarely have problems.

I usually try to keep at least one official backup battery that I can use, then I use third-party if I burn through that.

The battery life of the M50 is just decent so you might need more than two batteries, especially if you’re shooting video.

BM 2-Pack LP-E12 Battery

Available At: Amazon

With Charger: Amazon

I don’t usually buy Big Mike batteries but recently I’ve started using them a lot more with different camera brands. They are nice but don’t have the same capacity as the official batteries it seems.

I’ve listed both links, one with just the 2-pack, the other with the 2-Pack plus the charger. If you need a charger it’s not a bad option.

Wasabi 2-Pack LP-E12 Battery

Available At: Amazon

Wasabi is usually my go-to for third-party batteries. Wasabi sources their power cells from Japan and I’ve found them to generally have good capacity and good reliability.

The Wasabi 2-pack comes with a very nice USB charger that is their best design to date.

Best Memory Cards For The Canon M50

I’ve tested all the most popular memory cards in the Canon M50 to see which is best for shooting stills and video. You can’t just use any card in the M50, it likes some brands more than others and it needs fast cards if you’re shooting video.

I’ve put together this guide to batteries for the Canon M50.

Canon M50 Grips & Cages

There aren’t too many nice leather cases for the Canon M50, which is surprising considering it’s the #1 selling mirrorless camera in Japan.

Gariz and Lim’s are not making leather cases for this, but I have found an interesting Silicone case as a nice cage by SmallRig.

SmallRig Cage

Available At:  Amazon

A SmallRig cage is a great tool for videographers. It allows you to attach all your video accessories to the body of the cage so everything is secure and exactly where you need it.

SmallRig also makes additional accessories for their cages so you can really customize the usability of this system.

Tuyung Silicone Camera Case

Available At: Amazon

A lot of people like these Silicone cases. I personally would only use them if I was going somewhere hazardous to the health of the camera, but since there are no good leather cases, this is a great option to protect the body of the M50. They really enhance the grip and really protect the body from damage. Keep in mind they do begin to sort of stretch over time, also make sure you don’t get too much debris between the grip and body.

Camera Straps

There are lots of straps out there now but my go-to system is by Peak Design.

I like to mostly use the handgrip when I’m shooting but I like to use a strap when I’m traveling between locations, so having a peak design system that I can quickly take on and off has been amazing.

Peak Design Clutch Hand Strap

I couldn’t live without the peak design clutch hand strap. It’s very comfortable and really conforms to the hand. You can also clip a full strap to it using the peak design anchors.

Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap SLL-AS-3

This is the strap I use. There are thicker and thinner versions but I think for mirrorless cameras this is just about right. I love it and especially love how easy and quickly I can clip it on and off of my camera and switch it between different cameras with the anchor system.

Camera Cleaning

(6 Pack) MagicFiber® Premium Microfiber Cleaning Cloths

Micro Fiber Cleaning Nikon Z6 / Z7

Available at: Amazon

Microfiber cleaning cloths are one of those must-have accessories. Usually, my t-shirt works fine for cleaning off a UV filter or an LCD screen, but every so often I’ll need to sit down and give my gear and lenses a serious cleaning and nothing is better or safer on your glass or screens than a microfiber cloth.

After awhile these microfiber cloths will accumulate oil from cleaning your lenses or rear screens and they’ll end up just smudging film around on the lens. This is why having multiple cleaning cloths is a must and the 6-pack is very nice option.

Rocket Air Blasters

Recommended Cleaning Supplies Rocket Air Blaster

Available at: Small – Amazon / Medium – Amazon

Rocket Air Blasters are my favorite cleaning blasters because the fins at the base allow you to sit them upright like a rocket, they also have various sizes.

These are an absolute must-have for cleaning dust off the sensor or lens elements. Make sure you always do a few blasts to clean the debris out of the Air Blaster before blowing it on your sensor.

The images here are of some of the older blasters. I’ve gone through many of these. On the left is the large one, on the right, is the medium. Large is probably overkill for mirrorless cameras but the medium and small sizes are great.

When using the air blaster to clean your sensor, please be careful not to touch it against your sensor. Keep it far enough away so there is no risk.

Sensor Brush APS-C

Cleaning the Sensor With a Sensor Brush

Available at:  Amazon

The Sensor Brush is another must-have accessory for cleaning your sensor. Occasionally you’ll get dust on your sensor that does not want to come off with the rocket air blaster so the sensor cleaning brush is the best way to deal with it.

Try one of these before any other trick like those sensor swabs and the wet method.

I like the cleaning brushes by The Dust Patrol. They have very high-quality bristols with a wooden handle and are made in Germany.

Even if you don’t need a brush right now, it’s always nice to have. I usually only end up using one of these a few times a year.

Clean Your Sensor

The Sensor brush kit comes with a few little spongy Q-Tips. Don’t use those on your sensor, but you can use those to clean in and around the sensor-box.

Your Sensor brush should last you a lifetime if you take care of it. Never touch the bristles and always give them a few blasts with the Rocket Air Blaster before using them to clean off any debris.

Always keep your sensor brush in its plastic bag inside the storage tube when not in use.

There are several sizes of the sensor brush available. I bought the brush designed for full-frame cameras like the Nikon Z6 or Z7 but it also works on APS-C cameras like shown here in my photos.

Best Accessories Canon M50 / Kiss M Conclusions

The Kiss M or Canon M50 is one the most popular mirrorless camera and an extremely versatile tool for both video and photography.

Keep the camera protected and expand on its functionality with some nice accessories and you should have a great system for the years to come.
