Long exposure at Sakurai Futamigaura. Not very often are there waves here, but when there are it becomes a popular surf spot. The waves also help create some mood around the rocks, something that's always missing when I come here. 495 23

Fukushima Island. Not the Fukushima you're thinking of but one of the many islands in Nagasaki. This one is known for having amazing views of rice field terraces. 175 7
A pair of fireflies spiral in a final dance. These beetles only live about a week or two in this stage of life before laying their eggs and dying. Then the cycle repeats, Egg, Larva, Pupa (cacoon), Adult. Some firefly eggs are bioluminescent, and some species have a two year long cycle. 180 4
The tide slowly rises at the Floating Torii Gate of Ouo Shrine. This is an awesome little spot in Saga Japan and fairly unknown. By fairly unknown I mean there was maybe 4 other photographers there, rather than the usual 300 like at some of the other Japan hot spots. 487 16

Joshua Tree – Fujifilm XT1

A few weeks ago I found myself in Joshua Tree. I’ve been there a few times now but this time around things were going to be different. I had some new lenses, new cameras, and a different eye.

The last few years I’ve been shooting a lot of Landscape and HDR photography and found myself getting stuck with the routine that often comes with those styles. I was just going with the trends and I needed to hit the breaks.

This year I’m trying to shoot everything I can, looking for those incidental stories and moods. It can be challenging to get great shots, but at least this way the results are your own.

Using The Sony A7r II – Is It A Great Camera?

As part of my Voigtlander 35mm f1.7 review, I took a stroll down to the Walt Disney Concert Hall to get some test shots.

Actually the truth is, the Japanese Consulate is right there and I had to bring my half Japanese daughter there to get some paper work done. I paid for two hours of parking so took the rest of that time to shoot. 

This was my first chance to really use my Sony A7r II for something other than landscape work. Usually, or I should say, always when I go and just shoot for fun, I take a Fujifilm with me. They’re just more fun to use and you can actually shoot JPEG with them with great results, so post processing isn’t as heavy.

But I do still like my Sony and wanted to share some thoughts.

Voigtlander 35mm f1.7 Ultron Review

The Voigtlander 35mm f1.7 is a great lens for those who want something relatively compact, without having to sacrifice amazing image quality. It’s not the smallest 35mm lens you can buy, but it’s not the biggest either. It’s in that sweet spot. And while there are faster lenses out there, the f1.7 is still a great place to be at, especially for a lens this size.
