GoPro lists official memory cards supported by its cameras. Originally, they did this because the firmware on their cameras had many compatibility issues, and using the wrong memory card could result in crashes, corrupted files, and battery drain even when the camera is powered off.

Today, it’s not much of an issue, and with the new GoPro Hero13 and Tiny Hero, they’ve improved their camera firmware, so performance and stability should be better than any GoPro camera to date. However, it’s still a good idea to play it safe and stick with their internally tested cards.

GoPro Hero 13 Black – Amazon / B&H

Recommended MicroSD Cards for GoPro Hero 13 and Hero (2024)

The Hero Black13 can shoot at 5.3K at 60p or 4K at 120 frames per second, with 10-bit color support. GoPro rated the camera recording 2 hours and 3 minutes to a 128GB card in their SD Memory Card Capacity Settings. This should mean the camera has a max bitrate of 148-150Mbps or around 18.75MB/s, depending on your chosen recording mode.

GoPro recommends a microSD card with a V30 and Class A2 rating for these 2024 Hero cameras. They have not yet finished testing their cards for their recommendations, but here are a few cards that performed well in previous GoPro cameras and match those ratings.

Of these cards, I like the Sandisk Extreme U3 A2 card as one of the best values for this camera. However, you’ll notice no performance difference between the Hero13 and any of these cards; you might want a higher-tier card if you plan to use it for anything outside the camera.

GoPro Hero 13 Capacity & Data Rate

What is the maximum capacity of memory cards that can be used with the GoPro Hero 13 Black?

The GoPro Hero 13 Black supports microSD memory cards ranging from 64GB to 1TB. Considering the camera’s max data rate of 18.75MB/s, around 128GB or even 256GB card is likely the best option for most users, balancing ample storage with cost-effectiveness. A 256GB card would give you around 4 hours of recording at 5.3K 60 or 4k 120 at the High Bitrate setting. You’d get twice that time with the Standard Bit Rate setting.

What’s The Bit rate Of The GoPro Hero 13

Here is a calculated breakdown of the bit rates based on the GoPro Hero13 record time chart.

GoPro Hero 13 Memory Card Compatibility

For the GoPro Hero 13 Black, it’s crucial to use a U3-class microSD card with an A2 rating to ensure optimal performance.

To avoid technical issues, it’s best to stick with GoPro-recommended memory cards. Specialty cards, such as those designed for the Nintendo Switch, can sometimes cause compatibility issues with GoPro cameras. My older GoPros never worked right with those Nintendo Switch cards.

If you encounter issues such as rapid battery drain or missing clips, even with a compatible card, consider switching to a different card or reducing the capacity to 256GB or 128GB. These adjustments have helped me resolve similar problems in the past.

Can You Use UHS-II cards?

You can use UHS-II cards with the GoPro Hero 13 Black, but they won’t improve the camera’s performance since it only has a UHS-I memory card slot. A UHS-I U3 or A3 memory card is sufficient to reach GoPro’s maximum data rate of 150 Mbps (18.75 MB/s).

However, if you want faster transfer speeds for your footage, you can use an adapter to make your UHS-II card compatible with your computer, which can be quite beneficial. But you should wait to see if GoPro officially recommends any UHS-II cards, though I’ve never had issues with them in the past.
