Best Accessories Canon 5Ds/5Ds r

The Canon 5DS R is an old camera that does almost everything you could ask for out of the box. However, you should still consider getting some accessories that can extend the life or functionality of your camera.

Screen Protectors, Memory Cards & Batteries

Canon 5DS R Screen Protectors

You don’t need a screen protector as much for your Canon as you do with other cameras. The glass LCD is very very strong. I’ve had my 5Dmkii and still use it to this day and still don’t have a scratch on the screen. That’s without using a screen protector.

That being said, screen protectors are now very cheap and easy to get. So you might want to consider one.

ExpertShield LCD Screen Protector – Amazon – These guys are the best. I use them on all my cameras.

MegaGear LCD Optical Screen Protector – Amazon – Mixed reviews on this one. Most negative comments are about the top protector screen, not the LCD screen.

Canon 5DS R Batteries

I have all Canon batteries for my Canon, but I never really have needed more than two, so the price was never a big deal. If you want to have a few backups, then third-party batteries work great. The latest batteries are the LP-E6NH. The older E6 batteries still work but grab the latest if you’re ordering extras.

  • Canon LP-E6NH Battery – Amazon
  • Wasabi Power 2 Pack – Amazon

Canon 5DS R Memory Cards

CF Cards (Compact Flash Memory Cards)

The best-performing CF cards are the SanDisk, Lexars, Pixel Flash, Transcend, and KomputerBay.

I think the SanDisk and the Lexar cards are the most reliable although KomputerBay for a bargain card has come a long way.

I recommend you see the complete Canon 5DS R memory card speed tests before buying any memory card.

Top Shelf

  • SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB UDMA 7 Read Speed Up To 160MB/s – Amazon / Adorama

Bang For The Buck

  • Lexar Professional 1066x 64GB Read Speed Up To 160MB/s – Amazon

SD Cards (Secure Digital Memory Cards)

If you want to have a bunch of backup cards, it’s probably best to buy some SD cards. They are smaller, lighter, and less expensive. Their performance is also very good, they work fine for Sony A7r II shooters, so there is no reason they won’t work for the Canon 5DS and 5DS R.

Top Shelf

  • Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC U3 – Amazon
  • Kingston 64GB SDXC U3 – Amazon

Best Bang For The Buck

  • Sony 64GB SDXC U3 – Amazon

Camera Remotes And Shutter Releases

Remote Shutter Releases

Great tools for remotely triggering your camera shutter. These are one of those must-have items, especially for landscape and HDR photographers. I use them all the time on all my cameras.

  • Foto&Tech Remote Shutter – Amazon 2-Pack – Amazon
  • Pixel Pro Wireless Shutter Remote 100M – Amazon

Timer Remotes

I used to use timer remotes when I needed to shoot timelapse on the Canon 5Dmkii. That was until I installed the magic lantern hack which had it built-in.

Now the Canon 5DS R includes this interval shooting right into the camera so you can get by without one of these.

But, if you want to extend the functionality or have a wireless trigger, check some of these out.

  • Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Wired – Amazon
  • Polaroid Wireless Camera Shutter Remote w/Interval Timer – Amazon

Cleaning Accessories

You just have to own one of these. There is no way around it, I can’t even begin to explain how useful these things are.

Rocket Air Blaster – Amazon

My favorite method for cleaning the sensor when air does not work is with the use of a sensor brush.

Never touch the brush to keep them clean. Then blow some air on the bristles with rocket air to give a static charge. You’ll find they can pick up those stubborn pieces of dust that air won’t get.

DSLR Sensor Brush – Amazon

6-Pack Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloths – Amazon I go through these like socks. I can never have enough.

Best Canon 5DS / 5DS R Accessories Conclusions

While the Canon 5DS and 5DS R are a bit older now, they are still very functional cameras. Keep your cameras updated with the latest accessories like the new batteries, and get some nice cleaning supplies and this cameras should be good for at least anther decade.

the second “Pixel Pro Wireless Shutter Remote 100M” looks to be the better one… but the amazon link shows two models, an RX and a TX. which is better and how do you specify it? also the page does not specifically list the Canon 5DS R?

It’s two units, the RX is the receiver that sits on the top of the camera, and the TX is the trigger. It is a wireless unit.

oh! thank you so much for responding alik. sounds a bit awkward… but do you still feel it’s the best one out there? canon doesn’t make one? also do you know whether the wired electronic cable release for my old EOS-1 film camera will plug into the 5DS R?

thank you again for that alik… the Vello does appear to be superior. also I understand the 5DSR still has the same 3-pin connector for the canon wired release that I still have from my old EOS-1 film body – think it will fit? btw I see you have a Fuji… I’m keen for the new GFX 100 but want to wait a year or two for the inevitable improvements and price drop.

If you still have that wired release for your EOS 1 try it. It might still work but I’m not sure. I bet it does. That GFX 100 does looks amazing. I bet they do a $2,000 off sale in a year or so or some crazy bundle like they did for that 50r.

ok I’ll let you know when it arrives then. 😉 and yes I do hope you’re right about the next GFX 100 release… I’ve just learned to never go for the initial release of anything highly technical. thank you again for your help alik, much appreciated!

That’s a smart move. Early adopters of the Nikon Z6 Z7 got hit was that recall. That 5DIII had issues on initial release with the light leaks. It seems it’s very common for cameras to have issues like that once they are mass produced and get a million eyes looking at them. Hopefully enough people get their hands on a GFX100 to spot any potential flaws.
