This photo shows the Manai Falls of the Takachiho Gorge. It’s on Kyushu Island in the Miyazaki Prefecture of Southern Japan.
This place surprised me with how cool it was in real life. This area is stunning, especially in the fall. The Manai Waterfall is one of the top 100 falls in Japan. You can rent small row boats and paddle through them, which is how I got this photo.
This gorge was formed long ago when Mt. Aso erupted, creating a lava flow. These Basalt Hexagonal columns (called Columnar Basalts) are made when lava cools quickly.
It’s a little remote, but the area around these falls is fantastic and worth the drive.
This photo was taken back when I was still using the Canon 5DmkII. I don’t remember exactly what lens I was using, but it was likely the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II.
To see what the Gorge looks like from the top you can see this photo where we are looking down on the Takachiho Gorge.
