A huge list of all the best accessories for the GoPro Hero 8, both official and third-party.
Note For New GoPro 8 users: This is a new list just for the GoPro Hero8 which will require new accessories because of the new style of body. All the old ND filters, Karma grips, and even batteries will no longer properly fit.
Best Go Pro Hero 8 Accessories | The Essentials
Here are all the new GoPro Hero 8 official accessories with some good third-party accessories mixed in.
Best Batteries GoPro Hero8
There is a new GoPro battery and I didn’t realize this until using older batteries in my Hero8. They will give you a warning telling you to use the new batteries. My old batteries still work fine, but if you want to use your camera without any issues I would start buying the new batteries.
You can tell the difference by looking for the blue base on the new batteries.
Official GoPro Hero8 BatteriesThis is the new GoPro battery designed for the Hero8. It also works in all those older GoPro cameras that support this model of battery. The older batteries still work in the Hero8, but you will get a warning message.

Best Screen Protector GoPro Hero 8
If you treat your action cameras anything like I do you’ll likely destroy your screen or your lens cover in no time at all. I usually just buy replacement lens covers or yank one off one of my old cameras once mine was destroyed, but now GoPro has a screen protector you can get.
This will reduce the image quality on your lens a little, so use this sparingly. Or if you like to use these only sometimes, it might be better to buy the third-party screen protectors that come with 2-packs at half the price.
GoPro Hero8 Screen Protector | Two-PackAvailable At: Amazon This is the official screen tempered glass screen protector offered by GoPro. Many third-party brands also make these.

Best Memory Cards GoPro Hero8
I’ve tested all the most popular micro SD memory cards in the GoPro Hero8 and have a few nice recommendations if you’re looking for some cards other than the Sandisk Extreme version that GoPro offers.
Lens Accessories
There are a few companies making lens accessories so you can attach ND filters. I wish GoPro would just give us the option to use ND filters on the Rollcage, that would be the ultimate solution to this problem.
Image Quality Note: The Hero8 uses an electronic stabilization system which usually looks the best at faster shutter speeds. If you’re using ND filters to slow down your shutter for a more cinematic effect, you may want to turn off the electronic image stabilization and use a different method for stabilizing the camera for the best-looking image quality.
If you need stabilization with a cinematic shutter, the Hero7 with the Karma Grip and swappable lens covers is the better solution right now.
PolarPro Hero8 ND FiltersAvailable At: Amazon This is the Polar Pro ND filter set. It includes three ND filters, and an ND8/16/32 with a clip-on mount. |
52mmm Filter MountAvailable At: Amazon If you’re looking for a simple way of adding a 52mm filter to your GoPro Hero8, here is a mod you can attach to the camera. |
If you need just a protective cover, the GoPro Rollcage is a great solution. I’ve posted it below.
GoPro Hero8 Media Mods & Cages
There are a few media mods and cages by GoPro but also some housing by some third-party companies.
To use the GoPro Light Mod and Display Mod you will first need the Media Mod.
GoPro Hero8 Media ModAvailable At: Amazon This is the basic media mod with the built-in Mic and no attachments. You will need this if you want to attach a Light Mod or a Display Mod. |
Display ModAvailable at: Amazon This is the official display mod for the GoPro Hero8. This requires the Media mod first which is listed above.
|
Light ModAvailable At: Amazon The Light Mod can be attached to the top or the side of the Hero 8. This requires the Media Mod to work.

GoPro has priced the Rollcage very aggressively so this is a really good option and you don’t need to go third-party to save money here.
GoPro Hero8 RollcageAvailable At: Amazon Since the lens protector is no longer replaceable, a roll cage is a really good option for keeping your camera free of damage. You could of course always just subscribe to the GoPro Plus subscription and they offer a hassle-free camera replacement program for when you do beat things up. With the Rollcage, you can also take off the front lens protector if you want to improve your image quality and still get some protection around that front lens. There are aluminum cages that I have used in the past (like this) on Amazon that cost about the same price, in this case, you might as well use the official GoPro accessory. |
GoPro Sleeve LanyardAvailable At: Amazon Did you know you can personalize the look of your GoPro now with this sleeve and lanyard kit? It’s a great way to protect your camera a little while making adding a little color to the design. The Lanyard also makes it super easy to carry around so you don’t have to worry about dropping it if you don’t use a grip. You can get this in many different colors. |
GoPro Mounting & Grip Accessories
GoPro Magnetic Swivel ClipAvailable At: Amazon This accessory is a must-have. This is what I use the most and I absolutely love them. This is the best way to get POV footage if you’re carrying around a backpack. It’s so much less of a hassle than wearing one of those chest harnesses which I hated doing. |
GoPro ShortyAvailable At: Amazon This is the do-it-all tripod/grip/vlogging stick. |
The HandlerAvailable At: Amazon This is a simple grip for the GoPro Hero8. It floats and has an orange tip on the bottom so it’s easy to find in the ocean if you drop it. This is what I use mostly for a grip. |
GoPro Hero8 Cases
GoPro Official CaseyAvailable At: Amazon This is the GoPro carrying case. If you buy it just by itself it’s a little expensive, but they do offer a few bundles. Here (Adventure Kit – Amazon), (Sports Kit – Amazon), and here (Travel Kit – Amazon). I recommend you buy it with a bundle to get the most out of your money. |
Amazon Basics Carrying CaseAvailable At: Amazon Amazon Basics makes an insanely popular carrying case for the GoPro system. It comes in a few sizes to fit your needs.

Best GoPro Hero8 Accessories | Conclusion
This is just the start for now. I have some more accessories I’m trying out from third-party companies that I will list soon.
I try to only list the best accessories so you don’t have to waste your time with junk, but that requires a lot of time and testing as I’ve done with memory cards.
