The Nikon Z8 is one of the best do-it-all cameras, and it can be set up and configured for many different styles of photography or videography. This guide covers some of the essential accessories you may need to get you going.
1. Best Batteries For Nikon Z8
The Nikon Z8 uses the EN-EL15c battery.
The Z8 uses noticeably more power than the Z6 II or Z7 II, so having more than one battery is essential if you shoot a lot. If you’re shooting casually, you can go a full day off a single charge, but you do need to make sure you keep it charged. For example, I typically only use one battery a day when I’m shooting street photography, where I might shoot for around 4 hours with maybe 700 shots.
Note: Nikon has upgraded the battery since the original Nikon Z6. The new official battery is now called the Nikon EN-EL15c. Previously, it was called the Nikon EN-EL15b. This new battery is still 7 volts, but it got a pretty significant bump in total power, putting it at 2280mAh vs. the old battery, which was 1900mAh.
Official Nikon Battery EN-EL15c
2280 mAh / 16 Wh – 7V
The batteries provided by Nikon for their Z8 camera model are excellent, especially if you frequently rely on a second battery. These official batteries consistently deliver reliable performance with impressive power output and capacity. I use Nikon batteries as my primary battery, resorting to third-party options only on rare occasions when I require an extra backup.
Many third-party batteries that were working in the Z6 and Z7 models are not working for the Z8. However, the Vemico batteries are working for the time being. Keep in mind firmware can change, and it can disable third-party batteries again. I like these because they are bright orange, and I don’t get them mixed up with the official Nikon batteries.
A few more third-party battery brands that work for the Nikon Z8 are available now, and I’ll be testing and updating those options soon.
Vemico EN-EL15c Battery Pack
2 Battery + 1 Dual Charger
The Vemico third-party batteries are coded to work with the latest Nikon cameras. This is what I am using in the Z8. They are not as good as the original batteries, maybe about half the power of an official battery. You’ll also need to break these batteries in, and even then, one of my batteries is a lot better than the other, so there is some variation in performance.
- Battery Capacity: 2100Ah / 15.54 Wh
- Output: 7.4 VDC
SmallRig EN-EL15c Battery Pack
1 Battery with USB-C cable
EN-EL15c Battery with USB-C Rapid Charging: The EN-EL15c battery features a USB Type-C port, accelerating the charging process by 45% over other USB-C camera batteries and 65% faster than standard charging methods. High current charging (5V/2A) can achieve a full charge in just 2.5 hours. The battery also includes a visual charging indicator: a red light signifies charging, while a green light indicates a full charge.
- USB-C Fast Charging – Charges in 2.5 hours.
- Battery Capacity: 2400Ah / 17.28 Wh
- Output: 7.2 V
Cables For Charging or Powering Your Nikon
You can use a USB cable to power your Nikon Z8 externally while in use, but it won’t charge the camera’s battery simultaneously. The camera needs to be turned off to charge the battery. Remember to enable the “USB power delivery” option in the setup menu for this functionality. To power the camera externally, you’ll need a cable and a wall adapter or charger with a minimum output of 36W.
Make sure to prioritize PD (Power Delivery) compliant cables for charging and powering the camera. Some smart adapters may be PD-compliant but could face communication issues with the Nikon Z8, so also pay attention to the total wattage output as well.
Some wall adapters and cables may only provide 18W. So, I recommend starting with an adapter offering at least 45W. Generally, any brand on Amazon that claims to power a MacBook should be suitable for effectively powering your camera.
2. Best Screen Protector Nikon z8
ULBTER Screen Protector – 3 Pack 0.3mm 9H Hardness
The ULBTER Z8 / Z9 Screen Protector 2-Pack is a highly recommended option for photographers seeking reliable screen protection for their Z8. This pack includes two pieces of tempered glass, each measuring 0.3mm in thickness with a 9H hardness rating, and two screen protectors for the top display.
- 9H Hardness, .25mm thickness
- 99.99% Clarity.
3. Memory Cards

This carefully designed cage fits snugly around your camera, safeguarding it against everyday wear and tear. Despite its protective nature, the cage ensures easy access to all essential functions, displays, ports, and batteries, allowing you to maximize your camera’s potential while keeping it safe.
5. Diffusion Filters
Enhance your night cityscape or portrait photography by incorporating mist filters. These filters add a touch of cinematic charm to your videos and still images. For a wider blooming effect, I recommend the uncoated Cinebloom filters.
If you prefer a more controlled aesthetic, Tiffen’s coated glass black mist filters provide a refined, more controlled appearance. Here are a few Tiffen black Pro Mist Samples.
Moment CineBloom Diffusion Filter
For photographers and videographers aiming to infuse their night cityscape captures with a cinematic atmosphere, the Moment Cinebloom Diffusion Filters prove to be an excellent selection. These filters are crafted with uncoated glass and deliver an additional boost of luminance and reflections, resulting in a distinctive aesthetic that sets them apart from coated alternatives. The inclusion of brass threads ensures a seamless and trouble-free user experience.
When it comes to general photography, I personally find the 10% power option most suitable.

Tiffen Black Pro Mist Filter
The Tiffen Black Pro-Mist filter is a camera filter known for its versatility and stylish design. The filter’s unique nanoparticle construction creates a gentle, more controlled diffusion effect, resulting in smoothed blooming highlights, reduced contrast, and a touch of cinematic charm in your shots. It is particularly useful in challenging lighting situations and can create a stunning halo effect.
If you’re new to using this filter, I suggest starting with a power setting of 1/4. This setting delivers a noticeable effect without overpowering your visuals. You can anticipate a reduction of approximately 1/3 of stops of light or less.

7. Cleaning Supplies
Proper maintenance is essential for preserving the pristine condition and optimal performance of your Nikon Z8 camera. Various lens-cleaning cloths, blowers, and specialized tools are available to assist you in keeping your camera clean. Here are a few recommended cleaning supplies for the Nikon Z8.
Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloths 6-Pack
6 Individually wrapped Micro Fiber Cloths
Cleaning Cloths are essential for maintaining the cleanliness of your UV filters or lenses.
I like keeping a nice supply on hand, so I prefer purchasing them in bulk packs of six. Alternatively, you can find thicker microfiber cloths from various retailers that can also be useful in certain situations.
Rocket Air Blaster
When cleaning sensors, lenses, or filters, air blasters are essential tools you shouldn’t overlook. The Rocket Air Blasters are highly recommended due to their stable design, which prevents them from rolling off your desk. They come in different sizes, but the medium is the most practical and convenient option. A large size is great for more power.
Dust Patrol – Sensor Cleaning Brush
1 Full Frame Sensor Brush + 3 Chamber Swabs + Storage Tube
These brushes effectively remove dust and dirt from the sensor, which cannot be cleared with air blasters alone.
Store the brush in its case to ensure its longevity and avoid touching the bristles. Since switching to a sensor brush years ago, I have found that I rarely need wet sensor swabs.

- Intelligent Noise Cancellation: Enhance voice quality by reducing background noise.

The Rode NTG Hybrid microphone features a 10 Ohm impedance and is compatible with Nikon cameras.
Regarding on-camera microphones, both the Rode NTG Hybrid and the Rode VideoMic GO II are excellent choices. I lean towards the VideoMic GO II for run-and-gun scenarios, while the NTG Hybrid is better suited for professional settings, offering enhanced capabilities.
The Diety V-Mic is also great if you need 2-way recording.

The Rode VideoMic NTG offers the renowned sound quality of NTG shotguns to video content creators, run-and-gun filmmakers, voiceover artists, and podcasters.
