7 Must-Have Accessories Nikon Z9

  • February 1, 2023
  • AGriffin

To enhance your photography experience with the Nikon Z9, consider pairing it with the right accessories. These can range from lens filters to camera straps and can provide greater creative freedom and improved productivity. Regardless of your photography experience level, the right accessories can elevate your results and overall satisfaction with the camera.

Here are some top recommendations for accessories to use with the Nikon Z9.

Nikon Z9 – Amazon / Adorama / B&H

1. Screen Protector

ULBTER Screen Protector – 3 Pack 0.3mm 9H Hardness

Nikon Z9 Screen Protector

The ULBTER Z9 Screen Protector 2-Pack is an excellent choice for photographers in need of screen protection for their Z9. This pack comes with two pieces of tempered glass, both 0.3mm thick and rated 9H hardness, to protect both the main screen and the top display. The included extra screen protector offers added value, as screen protectors can be prone to damage over time.

Glass screen protectors can be very difficult to get off once they’ve been on for a while, so when replacing glass screen protectors, I usually apply gentle heat from a hair dryer before removal.

2. Batteries

The Nikon Z9 uses the Nikon EN-EL18d Lithium-Ion Battery battery.

Official Nikon EN-EL18d Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery

Nikon EN-EL18d BatteryThe Nikon EN-EL18d Battery is the official Li-ion battery for the Z9, providing up to 3300 mAh and 36 Wh of power at 10.8V. For serious photographers, it’s advisable to have one or two extra batteries on hand. When shooting video or photography professionally, it’s recommended to primarily use official batteries to avoid compatibility issues and ensure that firmware updates or other unforeseen issues do not affect the battery’s performance, which can be a concern with some third-party batteries for certain camera brands.

Available At: Amazon / Adorama / B&H

Nikon MH-33 Battery Charger

Nikon Battery ChargerThe Nikon MH-33 Dual Battery Charger is a great way to charge your EN-EL18d batteries. Your Z9 does come with one of these already but having an extra one is useful when needing to charge several quickly batteries.

The effectiveness of this charger will depend entirely on your USB power wall adapter and the cable. You can use Nikons or a more powerful third party by Anker or RavPower, or use the cable and wall adapter that comes with the camera.

Available At: Amazon / Adorama / B&H

Third-Party Wasabi Battery for Nikon EN-EL18d

Best Third Party Battery Nikon Z9When shopping for a third-party battery for your Nikon camera, the Wasabi EN-EL18d is a great option. Wasabi has been manufacturing high-quality batteries since its inception and is considered one of the most reliable third-party battery brands.

You can also order a 2-pack kit with a dual charger.

Cables For Charging or Powering Your Nikon

You can power your Nikon Z9 externally with a cable while it’s on, but this won’t charge the battery at the same time. The camera has to be turned off to charge the battery. Keep in mind, there is an option in the setup menu “USB power delivery” that needs to be turned on for this to work. You’ll need a cable and wall adapter or charger to deliver a minimum of 36W.

A lot of people have issues powering powerful cameras like the Nikon Z9 when it comes to finding the right cable and power adapter or power bank. The Apple Macbook adapters usually work but finding third-party adapters and cables can be tricky. USB cables for charging and powering your camera should be PD-compliant. Some smart adapters are PD compliant but then sometimes have issues communicating this with the Nikon Z9. You also have to pay attention to total wattage.

Your power bank or wall adapter needs to output fairly high watts. Apple’s can usually handle around 100W or more which is why they work. Some wall adapters and cables can be as low as 18W, so be careful. I’d start with something with a minimum of 45W. Basically, any brand on Amazon that says it can power a Macbook, should be able to power your camera fine.

3. Memory Cards

Fastest CFexpress Memory Card For Nikon Z9I’ve done a whole benchmark of most of the popular brands of memory cards for the Nikon Z9. Be a little careful about what you buy, some cards like Angelbird can be too thick, and some older generation cards don’t work well.

See this guide to see what works best.

4. Grips / Cases

There are not a lot of options for additional cases and grips for the Nikon Z9, so this list will be short until I find something better.

SmallRig Z9 Cage

Nikon Z9 Case

The SmallRig Camera Cage provides protection and enhanced functionality for your Nikon Z9. Constructed from durable aluminum, this form-fitting cage protects your camera from daily wear and tear while maintaining access to all functions, displays, ports, and batteries.

6. Diffusion Filters

Elevate your night cityscape or portrait photography with the use of mist filters for a touch of cinematic charm in both your videos and stills. I recommend the uncoated Cinebloom filters for added luminance and reflections, and the coated glass black mist filters from Tiffen for a more controlled look.

Moment CineBloom Diffusion Filter

Cinebloom Diffusion Filter

Moment Cinebloom Diffusion Filters are a great choice for adding a cinematic feel to your night cityscape photography and videos. The uncoated glass offers extra luminance and reflections, producing a unique look compared to coated filters. These filters feature brass threads for a smooth and hassle-free experience. For general photography, I like 10% power, keep in mind using one of these at this power can result in a loss of slightly less than 1/3 of a stop.

Tiffen Black Pro Mist Filter

Tiffen Black Pro Mist

The Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter is a versatile and stylish camera filter that can enhance the look of your photography and videography. Its unique nanoparticle design creates a soft diffusion effect that smooths highlights, reduces contrast, and adds a touch of movie-like magic to your shots. Ideal for challenging lighting conditions, this filter can produce a gorgeous halo effect. With its secure brass filter threads, you can be confident that the filter will stay in place on your lens without jamming.

If you’re new to using this filter, I recommend starting with a power of 1/4. This provides a noticeable effect without being too overpowering, and you can expect to lose about 1/3 of stops of light or less.

6. Straps

Using a strap on a Nikon Z9 provides a comfortable and secure way to carry the camera. With a variety of styles and materials to choose from, the strap allows the photographer to personalize their camera while ensuring ease of access and peace of mind when carrying the camera for extended periods of time. Whether shooting while traveling or shooting portraits, a strap allows for comfortable handling and added stability, making it a must-have accessory for any photographer using the Nikon Z9.

Full Straps Synthetic

Peak Design straps have a lot of great options for the Nikon mirrorless system. I often use the Clutch hand strap with an additional strap attached.

Peak Design Clutch Camera Strap

Peak Design Clutch

The Peak Design Clutch Camera Strap offers a perfect balance of security and flexibility for Nikon Z9 photographers. It features a secure hand strap with an Arca-Swiss base plate, complete with additional loops for attaching a secondary strap and adjustable side elements for a customized modular setup. Quickly attach and detach your camera as needed with this versatile camera strap.

Available At: Amazon / B&H

Peak Design Slide Lite

Peak Design Slide Strap

The Peak Design Slide Lite Strap is perfect for mirrorless cameras like the Nikon Z9. It features an innovative attachment system for quick and easy installation and removal and is available in various thickness options to accommodate different camera setups and lens sizes. For the Z9 you might want to go with their thickest option if you’re using a lot of large heavy lenses.

Full Leather Strap

For those who prefer a touch of luxury and durability, leather camera straps are a great choice for the Nikon Z9. These straps, while pricier, are made of genuine leather and offer longevity with proper care and maintenance.

There are a few leather straps that I’ve liked over the years and think will work well for the Nikon Z9

  • Tap and Dye – Camera Straps and Wrist Straps – The Tap & Dye accessories and straps are top-notch, featuring an understated elegance and high-quality construction. They offer a range of styles made from different leather materials. Overall, Tap & Dye straps are a dependable choice for anyone seeking a durable and stylish camera strap.
  • HardGraft – Instant Camera Strap – The straps from HardGraft are a top pick, with exceptional quality and attention to detail. I’ve used the Re-Process strap for years and have been thoroughly impressed. With a variety of options now available, HardGraft is definitely worth considering for your camera strap needs.
  • Luigicases – Luigi’s deluxe camera straps offer top-notch quality. Although the website seems primitive, these straps are highly recommended by photographers and can be easily found through a Google search or possibly on eBay.

Rope Camera Straps

Vi Vante Luxury Sheetline Rope Strap

Vi Vante Rope StrapThe Vi Vante Luxury Sheetline Rope is the only rope strap I’ve used and I’m a fan. With a length of 47 inches, it’s a good choice for taller individuals or for cross-carry. Although it’s not customizable in size, it’s a great option and bulky and durable enough to handle a Nikon Z9.

7. Cleaning Supplies

To keep your Nikon Z9 looking and functioning at its best, using cleaning accessories is crucial. An assortment of lens cleaning cloths, blowers, and other specialized tools can help maintain the camera’s condition. By having the right cleaning equipment, you can guarantee that your Nikon Z9 remains in top performance for many years to come.

Here are some of the top cleaning supplies for the Nikon Z9.

Micro-Fiber Cleaning Cloths 6-Pack

These are must-have cleaning items. They provide an efficient and effective way to clean UV filters or lenses without leaving any residue or particles.

To always have some on hand, I purchase them in bulk packs of 6

These are smaller in size which is great to pack into your bag. For thicker clothes for general camera cleaning, I usually just use the cloth bags that come with Nikon lenses, but you can find thicker micro-fiber cloths from retailers as well which are sometimes useful.

Available At: Amazon

Rocket Air Blaster

For cleaning lenses or filters, air blasters are an indispensable tool. The Rocket Air Blasters are a great choice with their stable design, allowing them to be placed upright without rolling on your work surface. Available in various sizes, the medium size is most practical and convenient to use.

Available At: Amazon

Sensor Brush

These sensor brushes are a must-have for cleaning your Nikon Z9’s sensor. They are effective at picking off sensor dust and dirt that can’t be cleared with air blasters. To ensure long-lasting use, store the brush in its case and avoid touching the bristles. The sensor brush is so effective, I rarely use wet sensor swabs since switching to it years ago.

Sensor swabs are nice to have as well. But don’t want to list them here because you need to know what you’re doing. Here is a complete guide to cleaning your camera and sensor.

Nitecore BB2 Electric Blower

BB2 BlowerThe Nitecore BB2 Electric Blower is a must-have tool for photographers and videographers. Its strong yet gentle airflow effectively removes dust and debris from delicate camera equipment and lenses. Its compact size and lightweight design make it convenient to take with you on shoots, while the rechargeable battery ensures you’re always ready to clean your gear. Both professionals and amateurs will benefit from having this accessory in their kit, as it helps maintain the optimal condition of their cameras and lenses.
